The idea of the seminar is to look at the relationship between the web and everyday elements, opening the idea of embedded programed technologies into everyday articles, and specifically to architecture, the next step would be to integrate this to the web, to have a complete network of things working all together from a remote location, or from direct interaction, and this could eventually become linked through the web. There is an interesting article in this matter written by Neil Gershenfeld, Raffi Krikorian and Danny Cohenof the bits and atoms department in MIT.

We all developed a single device which could have touch, sound, light or movement inputs resulting in the same outputs, created a circuit for this, and then we programmed a script to control the circuit, each of us had the possibility of creating an installation where several devices with our own script could interact, or we could explore interaction between devices with different scripts running at the same time.

This housing project was very complex, firstly because of the site, it is located in a very hilly area so the topography represented a great challenge, this kind of sites, which can be found throughout Mexico City, are usually solved with very expensive structures that deny the nature of the topography and become planes over a hill, with no sense of site. On the other hand, the value of the project needed to have access through both sides; having a 35 meter difference in height became a difficult solution for the project.

This project consists of four buildings which adapt to thetopography as terraces. Vehicles circulate between the buildings, making it possible to enter the complex either from it’s highest or lowest level. People walk through bridges which connect the buildings in the access levels of the apartments. The project has 57 apartments, 8 of which develop in two floors (duplex), while the rest develop in three floors (triplex).

This project resides in an exclusive development called Bosques de Santa Fe, within a ravine which has been cleaned and rehabilitated, making place to high-priced housing with a private first-class golf course. The project consists of two twenty six level towers with three underground parking levels. The lot destined for these buildings is located in the east end of the development, serving as a barrier, limiting views within Bosques de Santa Fe.

Through the idea of making the horizontal cuts of the various platforms evident, the horizontal planes of the whole building became stronger in order to give the whole façade the sense of movement, differing it from the traditional skyscraper.
The position of the buildings responds to various restrictions, particular to the land, and to the intention of accentuating the best views of the golf course.

This project is placed in Av. Nuevo Leon in the hip neighborhood of La Condesa,in Mexico City. The area in which it stands is protected by local and federal authorities for its architectural value, so we tried tomake a design that would not compete with its surroundings, exposing one of its sides to a street with smaller buildings. The complex is formed by two bodies, one to the front, living into the great trees which form the avenue, with two floored apartments, the second building is formed by one floor apartments which live towards a central plaza where a dialog develops between both buildings.

La Puerta

This project was part of an exchange program with the Rafael Landivar University in Guatemala, Guatemala, as an exercise to explore different views over the same matter. The idea emerged from a government program called Mexico-Panama, which had in purpose to trigger development through the length of the Pan-American Highway, which works as a link between Mexico and Central America. The selected site was la Mesilla a ravine divided by the border between Mexico and Guatemala. The project would consist of a series of requirements to enhance cultural exchange between these countries. We developed the projects and flew down to Guatemala to present them. La Puerta literally translates as the door/doorway.

This particular project had very ambitious requirements, in first place, we had the intention of placing the project right in the inclination of a dominant hill in site, this added certain complexity to it, because we needed to include a control base for the border-crossing of trucks and trailers, which would have been very difficult in such conditions, so we decided to divide the project, sending these area to a less difficult geography, leaving the use of the hill to a less aggressive use, destined to buses and general public, with a more extensive program, including banks, a hostel, a hotel, a cultural centre, a school, government offices(both Guatemalan and Mexican), a marketplace, various restaurants and small shops, a bus station and a small train station used to communicate the complex with the neighboring cities in both sides of the border.

We took advantage of the existing topography, forming platforms which mimetize with the environment as phalanges in which all the activities converge for ephemeral and static population from the cities nearby, Cuauhtemoc City in Mexico, and La Mesilla in Guatemala.

El Faro

This was an open competition for the Delegacion Miguel Hidalgo in Mexico City. Authorities reflect the necessity of cultural spaces for young people, basing this purposes in a plan conceived in Curitiba, Brasil, called “El Faro del Saber” translated as “The lighthouse of knowledge” which involved a series of public libraries with free access to computers, technicaleducation and various public services. The invitation was extended to a number of architecture faculties, as a space for its students to develop the project.

We reinterpreted the concept of the lighthouse transforming it into a horizontal luminous building that stands through a thick mass of trees in the park in which the site stood.

A premise for the competition was the access to everyone, so we decided to use horizontality as a mean to develop the project as a series of ramps which evolve around a concrete wall that becomes the medullar spine of the project, not only does it support the ramps, but with help of the steel structure which surrounds it, the wall works as the structure from which all the spaces hang, suspending slabs cover important distances which do not work as single slabs but as a story high built-in framework.

We took advantage of the existing infrastructure and we made an addition to the requirements, using our lighthouse as a mean of projection and lightning for an open scenic stage which existed in site.

We worked in the possibility of using the glasses which we proposed to sponsorship, so that the lighthouse would not need a great investment from city authorities for its operation and maintenance.

Romania in & out

We made a trip to Romania as part of the Masters Program in order map out the country to set up a multilayered structure to give way to further interventions. We developed the study based in two major cities and the relationship between both, Bucharest and Constanta, the work was to be multiscalar and based un three basic elements:

photographs/video
drawings/sketches/notes/dimensions
samples

XL 100,000 to 1,000,000 people
L 10,000 to 100,000 people
M 100 t0 1,000 people
S 1 to 10 people

We where stationed in Constanta, particularly in the port area. When we came back the whole class developed a booklet divided into specific areas of study, in our case mobility. Our part of the project is this booklet.
